It's All Good!!

Well another year passed and another year we managed to keep our names off the top 100 - go team!! However, it would appear that we managed to throw the best party once again! As you can see, there was no shortage of smiling faces - can't figure out if it was the BBQ or if it was the sheer Wild West hospitality...

The weather was fantastic all three days and even managed to hold out past tear-down.

The first round of pictures will be up this evening and the remainder of pictures will trickle in over the next couple of weeks. If you have any pictures or if you want to publish an article, feel free to submit either.

Many thanks to our fantastic sponsors and we all look forward to next year in Houston!

Please come back often to see new articles and pictures.

...and remember: It's All Good!

As the pictures get uploaded, they can be found in the gallery See all the pictures here: 2008 HLS&R World Championship Bar-B-Que Cookoff

The ole girl gets a face lift!

Well, the ole girl finished up getting her face lift. The old girl you say? Yes, the pit. She was quite contrary and needed a good whipping...into shape. After six full weekends, 4500 lbs. of blasting sand, four gallons of paint...some wood and some sweet talk and TLC she looks like new...right down to the new custom oak "WWC" engraved door handles and cedar plank fence.

You're in store for a treat. The pit was blasted down to the metal and repainted with six coats of high-temp paint. The entire trailer had the metal repainted. The floor was painted with non-stick oil based paint. A new cedar fence was installed around the prep area of the pit, the wood counters were routed round and polyurethaned. A handle was put on the back gate, new downspout pipes were cut to size and installed under the grease drain ball valves. The barrel doors had bigger bars installed and custom oak handles - new oak handles and brass bolts were installed on the tower doors. The tail lights had some new wiring done to give a solid ground (and they were tested). The hole in the front barrel was welded closed (this is no excuse Reggie!). And last but not least, the inside of the pit was completely cleaned (some ten or twenty gallons of grease, carbon, sand and part of Reggie's brickset {spelling intentional} from last year was removed)...I am sure that there were other items that were done but not noted, but that is the major stuff.

A big thanks to Mel who stuck it out with me for most of the job...honorable mentions to Mike and Princess for putting up with me and the mess I made...and to Mitch, Jim, Dava and Marty who came out and helped when they could. Also thanks to Rueben (aka Piss Ant) for doing a super pro welding job on the hole and welding a roof support for us. For some reason, we also had this jackass hanging around every time I was out in Bellville working on the pit.

You can see all the pictures in the phone gallery. Click here: 2008 A Pit Raising - Again!

I hope everyone enjoys the "new" look as a great deal of time and effort went into making this happen.

If anyone sees it and thinks something should have been done a different way or if they don't like the way part of it came out, please feel free to...

2007 Chili Cookoff

4TH Annual Houston General Go Texan Committee 2007 Championship Chili Cookoff

On Saturday November 17, 2007 the Wild West Cookers will be competing in the 2007 Houston Championship Chili Cook Off at Trader's Village. This event continues to grow every year and this year will be no exception. The weather has always been great and there is a good chance that we might even show up and cook something. We cannot guarantee it will be chili, but we will turn something in...like so many other events, please adjust your expectations accordingly. If you need more information than what is on the site, please contact the Trailboss.

The schedule is on our calendar. The official information (and rules REGGIE and JORGE) from the entry form is below (not that we are accustomed to following rules...):

A special manned entrance will be available from 6 – 9 a.m. on Saturday. The entrance is located at the south end of the facility and will be marked as “Pass Gate.” Those entering this gate should identify themselves as a member of a chili cooking team to the committee volunteers. No parking fee will be charged at this entrance during these times.

Traders Village charges $2 per vehicle for parking. Anyone entering the main gate is subject to this charge. Tasters Cups will be sold to the public for tasting chili. The cups will be approximately 6 oz. and will be sold in groups of 6 for $5. A ticket will be provided with each purchase as a vote for the Peoples Choice awards. Teams are required to cook 5 gallons of chili per entry for public consumption. The chili does not have to be the same recipe as the chili cooked for judging and can be cooked prior to the day of the cook off. See rules for complete information. Traders Village will be selling beverages; however, teams may bring their own beverages. Teams may give away beverages, but are not allowed to sell beverages or any other items from their booth. The committee will be selling ice to cooking teams. The bags will be 20 lbs. and will be sold for $3 each or 2 bags for $5.

All teams must check-in upon arrival. The check-in area will be to the right of the stage in the Red Expo. This also will be the event headquarters area. Ice may be purchased in this area. Chili and beans turn-in will be in the area to the left of the stage. Spaces will be assigned at the time of check-in.

Please keep in mind that his is deigned to be a FUN event. We are here to raise funds for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™. We will have a live auction immediately preceding the awards. We invite each of you to look at the auction items and bid on those items you like! If you have any questions, please e-mail Donald Alyea at Alyea@sbcglobal.net or call his cellular phone at 713.408.8302 during the event. Please call Donald at his home number, 281.587.8842, with any questions prior to the event.
